Eyelid inclusion cyst (Photo)

epithlial inclusion cyst of the eyelid
This photograph shows an epithelial inclusion cyst of the lower eyelid. This is a benign lesion filled with keratin material, giving the lesion a yellow-cast. It was treated by simple excision and expression of the inner contents at the slit-lamp.

To get a better idea what this bump looks like, you may want to watch our epithelial inclusion cyst video.

Margaret, I can’t comment on your cyst (not being able to see it personally) but make sure that your eye doctor takes a look at the area to make sure it’s nothing more dangerous. I don’t usually think of inclusion cysts as being “itchy,” but they are raised and this can be a cause of discomfort. If you have new itching, scaling, crusting, or bleeding of the area, then you need to be reevaluated by an md. Thanks for commenting!

I have one of these cysts and it is some times itchy but I have had it for years now. I thought it was caused by stress. It looks just like the picture but it is slightly lower down on my eye.

I have a similar one as the pic, it´s just located right above my eyelashes, not even close to the eye itself. Is there a technique to remove it without going to the doctor?

Editors Comment: I wouldn’t recommend it. While most of these lesions are simple keratin inclusion cysts that can be “drained” by slicing with a needle, you might want a doctor to check to make sure nothing looks malignant.

I have a small white cyst on my bottom eyelid, more in the center. It does not bother me at all, but my eye doctor recommends draining it. I am concerned about any procedure done around my eyes, especially when it may not be necessary. Any thoughts or questions I should ask my doctor as to why he suggests this procedure? Thanks.

I HAVE A (LEMON SEED SIZE) BOMP UNDERNEATH MY LOWER EYELID. IT IS NOT FESTERED, JUST KIND OF BETWEEN THE SKIN. I HAVE BEEN ON ANTIBIOTIC EYE DROPS FOR 2WEEKS AND IT REMAINS THE SAME. CAN YOU TELL ME WHAT IT MAY BE OR HOW TO TREAT IT/ SHOULD IT BE REMOVED?
THANK YOU,
MARYLEE

I have one of these cysts in the same spot as the photo. The opthamologist recommended local anesthethic and cutting it out, not just draining it as it might come back. Would you agree with that?

I had 2 of these removed from my right eyelid last year and am having 2 more removed Dec. 7 from my left eyelid. It was done by an eye surgeon and I had no trouble. He numbed it and I did not feel anything. For about a week you have to keep an antibiotic ointment on it, but I healed nicely. None has come back that I had removed. Nothing to worry about.
