Eyelid inclusion cyst (Photo)

Last updated November 4, 2007

epithlial inclusion cyst of the eyelid
This photograph shows an epithelial inclusion cyst of the lower eyelid. This is a benign lesion filled with keratin material, giving the lesion a yellow-cast. It was treated by simple excision and expression of the inner contents at the slit-lamp.

Margaret, I can’t comment on your cyst (not being able to see it personally) but make sure that your eye doctor takes a look at the area to make sure it’s nothing more dangerous. I don’t usually think of inclusion cysts as being “itchy,” but they are raised and this can be a cause of discomfort. If you have new itching, scaling, crusting, or bleeding of the area, then you need to be reevaluated by an md. Thanks for commenting!

I have had several of this type of cyst and they have aways been itchy and uncomfortable.

I have one of these cysts and it is some times itchy but I have had it for years now. I thought it was caused by stress. It looks just like the picture but it is slightly lower down on my eye.

I have a similar one as the pic, it´s just located right above my eyelashes, not even close to the eye itself. Is there a technique to remove it without going to the doctor?

Editors Comment: I wouldn’t recommend it. While most of these lesions are simple keratin inclusion cysts that can be “drained” by slicing with a needle, you might want a doctor to check to make sure nothing looks malignant.
