This photograph demonstrates the corneal thinning you see at the limbus in cases of Terrien’s marginal degeneration. As the slit-beam crosses the cornea, you can see the beam of light thin right in the area of the arcus/lipid deposits.
The etiology is unknown. Though this is a typical appearance, it is seen more often superiorly. To get a better idea of the cornea ectasia that has occured, you might want to watch the terrien’s cornea video that this photograph was taken from.
