PXF of the lens (Photo)

Last updated August 19, 2007

This photo shows pseudoexfoliation of the lens. This is when a basement membrane type material forms on the surface of the lens and zonules. This is an important finding to note prior to cataract surgery, as PXF can cause instability of the zonules and make surgery that much more difficult.

Here you can see a white material along the pupil margin at the arrow. The iris rubs over this rough surface and pigment can be knocked off the back surface and clog up the trabecular meshwork and cause glaucoma.

To get a better idea what this looks like, watch our pxf video from which this snapshot was obtained.
