Hypopion (hypopyon) Endophthalmitis of Eye (Photo)

hypopyon_ocular.jpg

This photograph is a microscopic picture taken of an eye at the slitlamp with a hypopyon. Also spelled “hypopion” this is a layer of pus in the bottom of the front anterior chamber of the eye.

If you look closely at the upper left-hand portion of the photo, you can see a clear tube entering the interior of the eye. This is a tube-shunt, likely an Ahmed tube, that is the culprit behind this case of endophthalmitis.

To get a better view of how this eye looks, you may want to watch our hypopion-endophthalmitis video from which this snapshot was taken.
